2024-25 Training Programme Second Semester: Registrations Open

We are pleased to announce our Training Programme for the second semester 2024/25.

Just before we all wind down for a well-deserved festive break we wanted to give you something to look forward to in the new year.

As usual, our training programme aims to support researchers across the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences in developing digital and computational skills. This semester's training programme explores methods of working with both structured and unstructured data with a focus on statistics and text analysis.

We are offering both workshops and courses this semester. Workshops are self-contained and last between one to three hours. Courses are longer training events comprised of two to three classes. All our workshops and courses are hands-on events so they will often require some preparation such as installation of software or downloading of teaching material.

Our training is delivered in person, online and hybrid. The online training (Silent Discos) will be delivered via Teams, the in-person training will take place in Room 4.35 of the Edinburgh Futures Institute building. This year, our Digital Method of the Month meetings will be hybrid (so you can either join online via Teams or come to the EFI building). Please make sure to check if the training you intend to attend will take place remotely, in person, or hybrid.

CDCS also offers the following training and support for researchers:

• Silent Disco events. These are asynchronous learning sessions where attendees will be pointed to tutorial content that they can work through at their own pace. An instructor will be available via Microsoft Teams chat to help with issues and further questions on the topic/training.
• Digital Method of the Month meetings. These are one-hour sessions where we discuss the practicalities of a specific method. This is a great space to learn about new methods and find out about their associated benefits and pitfalls, to help you figure out if this method is suitable for your own research project.
• Data Surgery meetings. These meetings are aimed at researchers who are in the process of applying digital and data-driven methods to their research and are looking for some advice and support from fellow researchers.
• Training Pathways. The world of digital research methods can offer overwhelming possibilities so, with the help of researchers that have already implemented digital methods in their own work, we are building a series of pathways that will guide beginners through the steps and concepts they need to master new methodologies.
