Beyond Social Networks: Advanced Uses of Gephi in Humanities Research

This two-session course introduces attendees to some advanced uses of Gephi in humanities research, such as networks of information transmission, and visualisation and analysis of financial data. This is an intermediate course, basic knowledge of Gephi at the level covered in the Introduction to Network Analysis is assumed, although attendance at the previous course is not required. No coding will be used in class.
The first session introduces the visualisation of information transmission networks in Gephi. It focuses on topics such as:
- Building information transmission networks using (historical) newspapers
- Applying Gephi’s plugins (GeoLayout) to the network
- Exporting the networks to Google Earth
The second session will focus on the visualisation and analysis of financial data in Gephi, covering topics such as:
- Building dataset for (historical) financial and stock data in Microsoft Excel
- Quantifying (historical) financial and stock data in Gephi
This is an intermediate-level training and some previous knowledge of network analysis and Gephi would be required. If you are new to Gephi you can attend the Introduction to Network Analysis with Gephi course.

- Know how to build your own dataset from (historical) data that goes beyond social networks.

This room is on Level 4, in the North East side of the building.
When you enter via the level 2 East entrance on Middle Meadow Walk, the room will be on the 4th floor straight ahead.
When you enter via the level 2 North entrance on Lauriston Place underneath the clock tower, the room will be on the 4th floor to your left.
When you enter via the level 0 South entrance on Porters Walk (opposite Tribe Yoga), the room will be on the 4th floor to your right.
