Getting Started with Python for Research

Python is one of the most popular programming languages. It is an object-oriented programming language with a simple and elegant syntax. It is also very versatile and has a big community of users. It’s relatively easy to learn, and it’s used in a variety of fields, from machine learning to text analysis. Thus, it is ideal for rapid prototyping and development of ideas and applications.
This course will introduce attendees to the basic concepts and features of Python. This will be done through the University Noteable service for ease of access and getting started. The goal is for participants to feel comfortable with creating simple Python programs and provide them with the autonomy and confidence required to progress independently.
This course will be taught by Chris Oldnall.

Level
This is a beginner-friendly course. No previous knowledge on the topic is required/expected, and the trainer will cover the basics of the method.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Python language syntax features for: conditions, logic, functions, collections and list comprehensions.
- Be able to program short blocks of code in Python, to solve basic tasks.
Differentiate between different approaches in programming and demonstrate an awareness of the optimal use to pick in a range of scenarios.
