Copyright 101
In Person
Using, adapting and sharing content, data and software require an understanding of copyright. This interactive series will introduce copyright within the context of data-driven research. Working with a copyright expert Naomi Korn, the course will draw on case studies, practical examples, and best practices.
During these two classes, we will cover:
-
Basics of copyright, how long it lasts, what is protected and who owns what rights
-
What are the different types of copyright-protected works and how copyright fits within the broader family of Intellectual Property Rights
-
How content, data and software can be used, for what purposes and what happens if permission needs to be sought
-
How to identify the exceptions to copyright and know in what contexts can be used
-
How to identify specific copyright issues associated with social media and linking
-
What are “orphan works” (works in copyright where the rights holders are either unknown or cannot be traced) and what are the options available to their use
This is a beginner-level event. No previous knowledge on the topic is required/expected and the trainer will cover the basics of the method.
