Copyright 101

Copyright Mashup

In Person

Using, adapting and sharing content, data and software require an understanding of copyright. This interactive series will introduce copyright within the context of data-driven research. Working with a copyright expert Naomi Korn, the course will draw on case studies, practical examples, and best practices.

During these two classes, we will cover:

  • Basics of copyright, how long it lasts, what is protected and who owns what rights

  • What are the different types of copyright-protected works and how copyright fits within the broader family of Intellectual Property Rights

  • How content, data and software can be used, for what purposes and what happens if permission needs to be sought

  • How to identify the exceptions to copyright and know in what contexts can be used

  • How to identify specific copyright issues associated with social media and linking

  • What are “orphan works” (works in copyright where the rights holders are either unknown or cannot be traced) and what are the options available to their use

This is a beginner-level event. No previous knowledge on the topic is required/expected and the trainer will cover the basics of the method.

Those who have registered to take part will receive an email with full details on how to get ready for this course.
