Comparing Sentiment Analysis Models in R

In Person

Sentiment Analysis is by now a common tool for digital humanities research in multiple disciplines. This workshop will outline the current tools and their utility, with a discussion of their different design, and outputs for use cases. The session will also provide a sample of different sentiment analyses and suggest possible applications in different use cases.

The workshop will provide a practical guide to applying sentiment analysis in different contexts and analysing sentiment with respect to different variables with the support of visualisation. The practical side of the workshop will be done using R, though Python-based sentiment tools (e.g. VADER will also be demonstrated).

This workshop will be taught by Alex Crest and Aybuke Atalay

After taking part in this event, you may decide that you need some further help in applying what you have learnt to your research. If so, you can book a Data Surgery meeting with one of our training fellows.

Those who have registered to take part will receive an email with full details on how to get ready for this course.

If you’re new to this training event format or to CDCS training events in general, read more on what to expect from CDCS training. Here you will also find details of our cancellation and no-show policy, which applies to this event.

Level

This workshop requires the following knowledge:

  • Essential: Familiarity with R Studio
  • Essential: Familiarity with installing and loading libraries
  • Desirable: Some background knowledge of pre-processing for text analysis

Learning Outcomes

  •  To become familiar with sentiment analysis and its utility
  • To understand how to apply different types and understand their differences
  • Learn how to visualise and apply sentiment analysis alongside other variables in text-based systems

Skills

After completing this course, you will be able to

  •  Discuss and source sentiment analysis tools to meet specific needs
  • Complete a research design that applies sentiment analysis
  • Confidently apply sentiment analysis in your own research
