Silent Disco: Introduction to the Bash Command Line

Our 'Silent Discos' are based on tutorials from the Programming Historian website.

Participants will meet for a brief introduction to the subject, and then you'll work on your skills at your own pace. The facilitator will be available in Teams Chat to reply to any questions that arise during the workshop and help troubleshoot or explain issues.

This tutorial will guide you through the basics of file systems, navigating and working with files and directories by using the popular UNIX shell, called Bash. You will learn about using shell commands in a Bash command-line interface (CLI) rather than operating via the graphical user interface (GUI). CLI-based interactions have advantages for computer users who need more precision in their work that often involves vast amount of data, such as digital historians. Furthermore, tasks can be easily automated through shell scripts, which are essentially recipes of text-based commands.

Those who have booked their place will receive an email with full details and a link to take part in advance of the live session.
